Babe (1995)

Chris Noonan directed this comedy film based on Dick King Smith’s The Sheep Pig. Babe (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) is an orphan pig who is rescued by Farmer Hoggett (James Cromwell) at a country fair. He puts him in the barn with his Border Collie Fly, Rex and their pups. Babe must prove himself, to both Hoggett and his animal friends.

Babe was another one of those films that I had on VHS as a child. It is a very sweet film, however there is the very sad bit when Babe’s friend Maa the sheep is killed by stray dogs and Babe is the prime suspect.

I think it is certainly a tale of overcoming adversity and how Babe overcame various obstacles to get Hoggett’s approval. I also loved the singing mice.

There is also a sequel made a few years after the first one.

My rating: 4/5
